Careers after Kids

  • sandton South Africa (map)

"Can we have it all, motherhood, a thriving career, and the flexibility in between?'

Am I the only one who didn’t really factor children into my career plan when choosing a career?  I knew one day I wanted a family, but I had no idea of the practicalities, time commitment, & energy that raising children requires!

This programme provides an opportunity for mothers to figure out how to have it all - on their terms. Did you know that this year 83% of us want to change our job this year

What does your perfect job look like?

We have teamed up with The Passionate Professional to launch Mentoring Mums - a platform to support you through this complex time in your life.

Your world has shifted, your ability to function on 3 hours sleep, the looks you get from your work colleagues when you rush out the door at 3pm, let alone pleasing your boss who isn’t a fan of part time hours, and on top of all that your junior is now your senior having won a promotion whilst you were on maternity leave.  Work / life balance - seriously does it even exist?

We don’t believe having children should hold you back in your career. Your daily world doesn’t have to be so stressful and chaotic (well maybe a little chaotic since we are talking about children!)

Take this opportunity to view your world through a different lens, reset your personal, professional and global aspirations, ditch the guilt and finally 'have it all - on your terms'!

What can I expect

Professional approach using coaching and training techniques - don’t worry there will be no burning candles, or technical jargon and gurus. Just simple tools and techniques uncovering things that make you tick, your passions, values and identity. Identifying the things that matter most to you and why.

Happiness is when what you think what you do and what you say are in harmony.
— Gandhi

Once we have the foundations on who you are we then can map out the possibilities to take you from surviving to thriving, help you to ditch the guilt, influence senior stakeholders, and create a career, job or working hours that are authentically you, matching your talents, education and family situation.

Note from the Organiser

Starting out a career in Audit at Ernst & Young I made my first reinvention to chase my passion in sport, working at Saracens Rugby Club rather than as an accountant. The next reinvention came when my husband accepted a job opportunity in Joburg, just as I had got my dream job at the London 2012 Olympics!

Moving to Johannesburg was tough, I realised how much of my identity was in what I did - and then I became a "trailing spouse”. Fortunately I became a mother to beautiful daughter and twin boys, along with gorgeous ridgeback dog Jonty. Taking this time away from work made me realised the stress I previously put on myself, and I learnt to appreciate the joy in being with my family.  I could no longer work in an international sporting role, so I retrained as a career coach, and I now have a role that can fit around my family and personal aspirations.

I haven’t got it sorted, and most weeks have mother guilt and usually leave the house with some form of gunk on me! But together with my husband we have made so many changes, and are constantly communicating and making conscious decisions to keep each other in check and make sure it works for us all.  Its my hope that this programme will inspire other mothers to ditch the guilt (or at least control it) and figure out how what "have it all” means to them on their terms.

Here's some nice things people are saying about us:

Finally someone who understands what it feels like to function on just a few hours sleep. Thank you for inspiring me to keep moving forward, to enjoy this time and to get excited about the possibilities my future career will hold.
Amy Jackson  - Mother two boys 2 & 6yrs.

I now know that I can’t have it all - but I am lucky to have a wonderful family and fantastic job, sometimes I’ll be brilliant professionally and others an inspirational mother - that ok, every day / week is a new challenge, I am doing the best I can.
