When we first arrived in Johannesburg, one of the things that struck me was the relative triumph of the independent coffee shop and restaurant over the global brands we are overexposed to in London. It’s an overlooked joy that a lot of the coffee shops and restaurants remain locally owned and it doesn’t take long before you are on first named terms with the staff and owners.
Before having children I would have more likely written a blog on the best places for a long and often boozy lunch. Now, children and an open plan house, have made me appreciate more a quieter places where I can work or meet people for business or pleasure.
Here are my favourite morning spots
If you are working you have to use the bar or sofa’s, they keep the tables for people eating. Great atmosphere, great coffee, and consistent wi fi.
Quite a few of the seats have power sockets so you can charge up your computer / phone as well as get connected to super fast fibre wifi. This place has lovely buzz to it, but I would recommend coming a little later (after 9) as beforehand you will struggle to get a seat beforehand. Their eggs are simply incredible!
Volvo Telo - Parkhurst
There are a number of Volvo Telo's around Joburg, but the only one (that I know of) with access to wi fi is on 4th Avenue, Parkhurst.
Nice - Parkhurst - amazing freshly made breakfast, egg baskets and pancakes are my fav! They now have super fast wifi too so its great place to catch up on some work.
Bean There - 44 Stanley - There is a coffee roaster right in the middle so a great smell emanates from this place. Not lots of tables, but a great meeting place with reasonable wifi.
The Whippet - Linden - Perfect for something a bit different, whether its a Whippecchino, fruit tea (pineapple and ginger my fav), or cordial (Lemon and Ripe Orange is yum). This is a lovely and at the heart of a great community in Linden.
Father Coffee - Rosebank and Braamfontein. - Quite simply the best coffee I have ever had here in South Africa. Amazing!
Voodoo Lily Cafe - Birdhaven, I go here straight after walking our dog, since they are really dog friendly. Its lovely place to people watch, and reasonable internet speed. All fresh produce, great to at weekend or to take kids (supply high chairs and crayons).
Bella - If you are meeting someone from Sandton then this place is a gem (I would love to know of more if you have any fav Sandton places - let us know in the comments below!)
Junipas - Bryanston Great if meeting someone from Dainfern or the northern suburbs, easy parking, and nice seating outside (although as usual in Joburg its over-looking a car park).
Priest Espresso Bar - Rosebank/ Parkwood. Priest is an editing company, that services the creative freelancers with great coffee!
A couple of the better Chains
Doppio Zero - Good wifi and usually good close to good parking, easy and simple meeting spot.
Tasha’s - Lovely breakfasts and lunches, its nice to take guests, and most have lovely outdoor seating areas. Good meeting venue, very unreliable internet.
